Easy Homemade Dry Mala Hotpot
I like spicy hotpots very much. I used to eat it in restaurants, but I felt that the ingredients needed to be fresh, and it was not good for the body to eat it often. After all, the oil used in restaurants could have been better, and there were better ingredients.
Making your own nutritious and healthy spicy hotpot at home is satisfying and affordable. You can whip up a big pot for just a dozen yuan! Today, I’m excited to share a homemade spicy hotpot recipe that is spicy, fresh, fragrant, delicious, and perfect with rice.
Ingredients:
- Dried tofu
- Bamboo shoots
- Meatballs
- Stewed meat
- Mushrooms
- Frozen tofu
- Duck blood (a favorite among kids)

Instructions:
Prepare the Base: Start by adding the ingredients that need to be boiled—mushrooms, meatballs, bamboo shoots, and frozen tofu—into the pot.
Chop Seasonings: While those are cooking, cut some scallions and garlic into slices. Crush a few garlic cloves flat and chop some into small pieces for later use. Don’t forget to prepare your favorite leafy greens: wash them and cut them in half.
Add the Proteins: After boiling for a couple of minutes, add the stewed meat and duck blood. Stir gently and let them cook for about a minute. Once everything is cooked, remove them from the pot and set aside.
Create the Sauce: In the same pot, add a piece of spicy base along with onions and ginger. Stir-fry until well combined. Add a spoonful of Pixian bean paste once the sauce has melted, and continue to stir until the oil turns red. Then, toss in the blanched vegetables, followed by the leafy greens, stir-frying until they are softened. Season with a little oyster sauce, light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, edible salt, sugar, and a sprinkle of chicken essence.
Finish the Dish: To create a fragrant topping, add red pepper, minced garlic, and peppercorns into hot oil until aromatic. Mix this into your hotpot, and it’s ready to enjoy!
